History of the J. F. Nordlie Company John Nordlie is the founder of the J. F. Nordlie Company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he has been a life-long resident. He developed an interest in pipe organs as a child; this grew in his teen years while he studied the pipe organ at his church during choir practice. While attending college at Augustana in Sioux Falls, John spent his interims studying with A. Eugene Doutt, an organ builder from Watertown, South Dakota. He also studied organs in Holland, Germany and Denmark during his college years. Upon graduation from Augustana in 1974, with a degree in business administration, John apprenticed with master organ builder Fritz Noack in Georgetown, Massachusetts. In August of 1976 John returned to Sioux Falls and started the J. F. Nordlie Company in his father's carpentry shop. His first pipe organ, built for First United Methodist Church in Appleton, Minnesota, was completed in 1977. As the organ company grew, both in size and reputation, a larger shop and office were in order. In 1983 construction began on the company's current location, 504 South Charlotte Avenue. The company moved to the facility in early 1984. To date the J. F. Nordlie Company has completed forty-four instruments, ranging in size from small, one manual practice instruments to three manual, fifty-three rank church organs. For more information on the organs, see the portfolio. In 2001 the J.F. Nordlie Company celebrated its 25th Anniversary. |
